A New Adventure
Twenty years at The Times—and what comes next
I have some exciting news to share: After 20 years at The New York Times, I’ve decided to move on to my next adventure.
Over the past two decades, I’ve been incredibly lucky to have played a part in the Times’ remarkable digital transformation -- helping to develop and implement our digital subscription business, pioneer the use of audience analytics in the newsroom, and build innovative tools that help our colleagues use data and insights to make smarter decisions.
But I’ve been doing other important work as well. Since the publication of my memoir More Than We Expected: Five Years With A Remarkable Child, I’ve been invited to share our family’s story with clinicians and caregivers across the country. It’s been deeply gratifying to see how our experience helps families navigate their own journeys and improves how medical professionals care for patients like our son. So I’m taking some time to build on this work and see where it might lead.
Along the way, I’ll be immersing myself in the world of AI. What I’ve seen so far has rekindled the creative energy I first felt when I learned to code decades ago. I’m really excited to see first-hand how these new technologies can transform the things I care deeply about: storytelling, connecting with audiences, and collaborative decision-making -- especially in the context of pediatric medicine.
I will forever appreciate the many amazing colleagues I’ve worked with at the Times and all of the other friends I’ve made along the way. And I’m just as grateful that my memoir has allowed me to meet incredible people whose stories and experience resonate with our journey as parents of a medically complicated child.
Please reach out via email (james@morethanamemoir.com) if you have any ideas or advice, know of specific opportunities or organizations, or can introduce me to someone I should meet. I’d love to reconnect and imagine what’s next.
